Zelenskyy meets Macron as Iran war overshadows Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Paris for discussions with a key ally of Kyiv. The timing of the visit coincides with the U.S.-Israel conflict against Iran, which has diverted focus from Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. As the Iran war enters its second week, efforts to broker peace in Ukraine have stalled, with critical talks delayed or reshaped.

Sanctions and Energy Pressures

The French presidency emphasized that Zelenskyy’s talks with Macron aim to intensify pressure on Moscow. A key topic is the “shadow fleet” of aging oil tankers used to bypass sanctions. Meanwhile, the Iran war has strained global oil markets, pushing Brent crude prices to around $100 per barrel. Gulf states, facing relentless Iranian attacks, are struggling to replenish their air defense supplies.

“Nothing—no crisis, no development—will shift our focus from Ukraine, which remains a central security concern,” stated a French official prior to the meeting. “Our backing for Kyiv will remain steadfast.”

Amid these challenges, the Trump administration announced a temporary relief for Russian oil exports, allowing a 30-day window for sanctioned shipments. This move has drawn backlash from Ukraine and European partners, as Russia’s energy sales are its primary revenue stream. Macron reiterated France’s commitment to maintaining sanctions, noting the U.S. had granted limited exemptions.

“The U.S. has provided some exemptions, but the G7 maintains its stance against Russia,” Macron said. “The current situation does not justify lifting these measures.”

Zelenskyy criticized the U.S. decision, warning it could provide Russia with $10 billion for the war. He argued this undermines peace efforts. In response to the Gulf states’ air defense needs, Ukraine has proposed sharing drone interception technology in exchange for missiles. The leader hopes this could sway Russia-friendly nations to apply pressure on Moscow.

Impact of Strikes on Ukraine

On Friday, a Russian missile attack near Kupiansk in eastern Ukraine killed three people and injured four. The strike targeted a bus in Nova Oleksandrivka, leaving windows shattered. Local investigators confirmed the driver and two passengers were among the victims. The General Prosecutor’s office reported damage to nearby homes, though the Kremlin has yet to comment, insisting its forces avoid civilian casualties.

As the Iran war escalates, Ukraine’s leaders are navigating a complex landscape of alliances and resource shortages. The ongoing conflict has not only disrupted diplomatic progress but also highlighted the fragility of supply chains for critical military equipment.
