Trump Warns UK Trade Deal ‘Can Always Be Changed’

US President Donald Trump emphasized that the trade agreement between America and the United Kingdom remains flexible, stating it “can always be revised.” During an interview with Sky News, he highlighted his belief that the deal was favorable, though he noted it was “better than I had to” accept. This remark followed his recent criticism of UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who had declined to support the US-Israel conflict against Iran in late February.

Strained Relations Over Middle East

The rapport between Trump and Starmer has faced tension in recent weeks, particularly regarding the Middle East. Trump frequently accused Starmer of adopting a “no Winston Churchill” stance on the war, suggesting his leadership lacked the strength of historical figures. Despite this, Trump acknowledged a personal connection to the UK’s monarch, stating he “liked Starmer” but called his administration’s policies on immigration and energy “insane.”

“When we asked them for help, they weren’t there. When we needed them, they weren’t there. And they still aren’t there.”

State Visit Takes Center Stage

Trump insisted the current friction would not overshadow the upcoming state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the US. “I’ve known the King for a long time, and he’s not involved in that process,” he said. When asked about the highlights of the visit, he expressed anticipation: “Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful.”

In May of the previous year, the UK secured the first tariff agreement with Trump after his return to the presidency, reducing import duties on cars, aluminium, and steel. However, recent disagreements over the Iran conflict have cast a shadow on the relationship. Trump’s comments during the interview underscored his view that the trade deal, while satisfactory, remains subject to change, reflecting ongoing uncertainties in US-UK ties.
