‘I thought my husband was cheating – the truth was far more devastating’
Anna and her husband James* had settled into a routine of work and family life. He managed his tattoo shop, while she balanced office hours with childcare for their two young children, who brought constant energy to their Midland home.
James would often excuse himself for errands, claiming he needed to run to the shop. These outings typically lasted a couple of hours, yet he returned with little to show for them—just a chocolate bar or a random item.
“He told me it was for banking and client confidentiality, and so people couldn’t steal his info when he was out and about,” Anna recalls. “I just brushed it off, but the feeling of dread that had been growing in the pit of my stomach for months just intensified.”
Other signs had been accumulating. James carried his phone everywhere, even into the bathroom, and kept it tucked in his pocket. He’d installed a privacy screen on his device, which he justified as a security measure.
Anna’s suspicions deepened when she noticed something unusual in his work diary. While he was out one morning, she flipped through the pages and saw the name “John” appearing every few weeks, marking entire days that seemed out of place for his type of business.
Days later, Anna searched his pockets and found a train ticket for the same day John was scheduled to visit the studio. The discovery left her shaken, prompting her to take drastic action.
“I felt I needed professionals to help because they would know the best way to uncover the truth,” Anna explains. “I didn’t want to do it myself because I didn’t want to be sneaking around and following him.”
A detective from Reveal Private Investigators was assigned to track James. The next morning, Anna was at home with the children when the investigator called with a startling revelation.
“They were really considerate with how they told me and gently said they had seen James arrive at his studio, go in, turn all the lights on and open the blinds,” the investigator recounted. “But then he locked up again, left through the back gate and headed for the train station.”
After the train ride, James purchased a greeting card and baby toys, then stopped to write a message inside the card. His next stop was a restaurant where he met a woman and a newborn baby.
“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, and when I saw photos, I could just tell from the way he was holding the baby and looking at it that it was his,” Anna says. “My heart dropped.”
The fallout was intense. Anna described the event as “life shattering,” with tears flowing uncontrollably as she processed the betrayal. Despite the pain, she felt a mix of relief and clarity.
Later that day, Anna confronted James. “I told him straight out: ‘I think you’re cheating on me. I think there’s more to the story as to why you’re going out at night, why you’re being so secretive,’” she remembers. “I mentioned about the appointments in the diary, and he just denied everything.”
When Anna produced the evidence, James finally broke down. He confessed to being with another woman for a year and admitted the child was his. “He was immediately apologetic and begged for forgiveness,” Anna says. “But how sorry can you really be when you’ve done all that? I knew it was the end then.”
Anna’s anger was fierce, and it lingered long after the initial shock. She packed his belongings, threw them out the door, and demanded he leave. “I was furious. I told him that he’d ruined everything,” she explains. “He’d destroyed our little family unit, turned the kids’ lives upside down.”
James returned for a short period, claiming it was a holiday, but the separation became permanent as the couple began rebuilding their lives in different directions. “I was angry – I still am,” Anna concludes. “You can never forget about someone doing that to your family.”
