Christopher Nolan singles out Odyssey actor who reminded him of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
Christopher Nolan Highlights Odyssey Star's Ledger-Like Impact
Christopher Nolan singles out Odyssey actor - Christopher Nolan singles out Odyssey actress Samantha Morton for her remarkable contribution to his epic film, drawing parallels to a memorable moment from The Dark Knight. The celebrated director revealed that Morton received an unscripted standing ovation from the crew during production, a rare occurrence he remembered from Heath Ledger's time on set. This comparison underscores the profound effect Morton's performance had on everyone involved in the ambitious project.
A Memorable On-Set Moment
Nolan, now 55, spoke about Morton's portrayal of Circe in glowing terms during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. Despite having limited screen time in the sprawling narrative, the actress made an indelible impression on the filmmaker. He described her as someone who fundamentally shifted the energy of the production whenever she appeared on camera.
"This was a massive film and she is someone who comes in and changes the dynamic," Nolan explained. "In some weird way, the film lived or died over that character. She was the fulcrum. I've always admired Samantha's work, she brings so much depth of thinking about her role, there are no limitations on her performance."
The director recalled sharing this experience with his wife and producing partner Emma Thomas. Thomas immediately recognized the significance, noting that such spontaneous applause had happened only once before during the filming of The Dark Knight in 2008, when Ledger delivered his legendary performance as the Joker.
Critical Acclaim for the Epic
Early reviews of The Odyssey have been exceptionally favorable, with critics praising both the visual grandeur and the stellar ensemble cast. Jacob Stolworthy, The Independent's film and television correspondent, called it the most ambitious project Nolan has undertaken to date. He noted that the film contains approximately three times the number of spectacular set pieces compared to the director's previous works.
"This film has about triple the number of huge set pieces than any of Nolan's previous films, and every single one of them is breathtaking in their own way," Stolworthy remarked. "In The Odyssey, Nolan showcases visual trickery in a way you've never seen before."
The correspondent also highlighted Tom Holland's performance as Telemachus, calling it the actor's best work yet. Alongside Holland's achievements, Stolworthy emphasized that Morton manages to captivate audiences despite appearing in only a select number of sequences throughout the lengthy production.
