Ex-footballer Barton denies golf club attack
Joey Barton, the 43-year-old former footballer, has rejected claims of assaulting a man at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside. The incident, which occurred on 8 March, is under investigation for grievous bodily harm with intent. Barton, currently detained at Liverpool prison, appeared via video link at Liverpool Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation session. He is set to stand trial for seven days beginning 1 September, following his earlier denial of bail during a magistrates hearing.
Accompanied by co-defendant Gary O’Grady, 50, Barton is accused of attacking Kevin Lynch, 51, a former non-league football manager and founder of NexGen Academy, a special education school. The court was informed that the pair had been consuming alcohol with Lynch at the golf club prior to the alleged altercation. Lynch sustained severe eye injuries during the incident, according to the prosecution’s account. O’Grady, who also appeared in court, did not formally respond to the charges.
Player and manager’s background
Barton, who played for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille, has a notable career in English and French football. Additionally, he served as a manager for Fleetwood Town. The case highlights a contentious event during his time as a professional athlete, with the trial expected to reveal further details about the altercation.
