Sudanese Man Arrested in Connection with Four Deaths During Channel Crossing Attempt

Four individuals, including two men and two women, lost their lives during an attempt to board a water taxi near Saint Etienne au Mont, close to Calais. The National Crime Agency (NCA) stated that a 27-year-old Sudanese man was detained on suspicion of endangering lives following the incident on Thursday.

The suspect was apprehended at Manston processing centre in Kent and is currently held in police custody, according to the NCA. While 38 people were sent back to the French coast, 74 ‘sailed on to the UK’, the agency noted, with investigators currently interviewing those who made the journey to the UK.

Thirty-eight individuals were returned to the French shore, but 74 ‘sailed on to the UK’, the NCA added.
