Manhunt after attempted arson attack on synagogue

Two individuals are now under investigation following an attempted arson at a synagogue in north London. The incident involved the throwing of two bottles, believed to contain petrol, toward the building. Police have classified the attack as an antisemitic hate crime, stating that the suspects, wearing balaclavas, approached the structure around 01:00 BST and hurled a brick along with the bottles. No damage or injuries were reported.

Authorities are also examining a separate arson incident from last month, where four ambulances linked to a Jewish community charity were set ablaze. Counter-terrorism units are assisting in both cases. The Finchley Reform Synagogue’s cantor, Zoë Jacobs, described the community as “proud, progressive and welcoming,” emphasizing that the attack aimed to intimidate the British Jewish population. “We will not be deterred by these cowardly acts,” she stated, adding that the community remains well-supported by the police, government, and key partners.

“This shocking attempt to harm a local synagogue follows a series of alarming attacks on the Jewish community in Finchley and Golders Green,” said Labour MP Sarah Sackman. “British Jews must be free to go about their lives without fear, whether taking their children to nursery or attending synagogue. We do not want to live behind ever higher walls.”

Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan expressed gratitude for the police response on X, noting that no one was injured but urging anyone with information to contact officers. The Community Security Trust (CST) highlighted its support for the affected location and collaboration with the Met. The Jewish Leadership Council called the event “horrified,” while the Holocaust Educational Trust linked it to “a broader pattern of rising antisemitism, which must be confronted with urgency.”

Det Ch Supt Luke Williams confirmed the Met is aware of the community’s concerns, especially after the Golders Green attack. “Detectives are working urgently to identify the suspects,” he said. “We are working closely with the synagogue and meeting regularly with community leaders to ensure swift action.” The police are appealing for CCTV or dash cam footage to aid their investigation.
