NYPD Officer Dies in Medical Incident During Deployment to Kuwait in Iran Conflict
City and state officials confirmed the death of a New York City police officer while stationed in Kuwait, participating in military operations against Iran. The officer, Major Sorffly Davius, passed away at Camp Buehring on Friday, as stated by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. She called Davius a “true Citizen Soldier” and highlighted his dedication as a spouse and parent.
“Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers,” the NYPD remarked in a social media post. “May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.”
Davius had previously served in the U.S. Army National Guard, rising to the rank of major within the 42nd Infantry Division. Before his overseas assignment, he was part of Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a unit tasked with securing New York’s key sites from potential threats, according to Hochul. She emphasized that his life exemplifies the significant sacrifices of National Guard members, who fulfill multiple roles as citizens, first responders, and soldiers.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch honored Davius in a statement released Saturday. “His career was defined by service — to his country and to New York City,” they said.
Seven U.S. service members have been killed in the joint operation against Iran, with six of them losing their lives in Kuwait. A seventh fatality occurred Saturday evening, following injuries from a March 1 attack on U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, as reported by U.S. Central Command.
