OpenAI boss Sam Altman’s home targeted with Molotov cocktail
San Francisco police apprehended a 20-year-old suspect following an attack on the residence of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, where a Molotov cocktail ignited a perimeter gate. The incident occurred early Friday in the North Beach district, prompting officers to arrive at the scene.
Although the SFPD has not disclosed the suspect’s identity or the specific location of the attack, an OpenAI representative confirmed on Friday that the targeted property belonged to Altman. The spokesperson added that the same individual had “also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters,” according to police.
“Thankfully, no one was hurt,” the OpenAI spokesperson reported.
Despite fleeing the scene before police arrived, the suspect returned to an OpenAI office around an hour later, declaring intentions to “burn down the building,” according to law enforcement. The individual was subsequently taken into custody.
An SFPD officer noted that the status of the suspect’s arrest and potential charges remained under investigation, with no definitive updates provided by Friday afternoon.
Altman, a billionaire with multiple properties, resides in San Francisco, the city where OpenAI was established and continues to operate. As a prominent figure in AI, Altman has emerged as a globally recognized tech executive.
The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 catalyzed widespread interest in AI-driven innovations across the tech sector. This development has spurred over $100 billion in annual financial investment within the industry.
While the broader impacts of AI are still unknown, OpenAI posits that AI’s growing sophistication and application across nearly every job category will lead to substantial workforce displacement, resulting in major societal and economic shifts.
Earlier this week, OpenAI proposed policy measures to mitigate AI’s negative effects, emphasizing a “people-first” approach with initiatives like job training and capital gains taxes.
