Robert Jenrick, who represents the Newark constituency, participated in the 2024 contest to determine Rishi Sunak's successor as Conservative Party leader, though he was ultimately unsuccessful in his bid. Following his departure from the Conservative Party, Jenrick joined Nigel Farage's Reform UK organization, where he currently holds the position of Treasury spokesman.
The police examination into the provenance of this donation was triggered by a referral submitted by the Electoral Commission, as reported by The i Paper. The financial contribution in question represents a segment of a larger £100,000 donation that originated from British entrepreneur Phillip Ullmann. This donation was channeled through a business entity known as Spott Fitness and was directed specifically to support Jenrick's leadership campaign efforts.
Controversy has emerged regarding allegations that £37,500 of the total amount was ultimately derived from a foreign source—specifically, American businessman Gary Klopfenstein. If these allegations prove accurate, the donation would constitute a violation of United Kingdom electoral regulations, which impose restrictions on foreign contributions to domestic political campaigns.
"We have launched an investigation following a referral from the Electoral Commission on Tuesday, 6 January concerning donations connected to a political party's leadership campaign."
A representative for the Metropolitan Police confirmed the initiation of this inquiry, noting that the investigation was prompted by the Electoral Commission's referral on the specified date.
"We have been investigating donations connected to a 2024 leadership campaign. Evidence of potential offences outside our remit was referred to the Metropolitan Police Service on 6 January 2026. Our investigation is paused pending their investigation into this matter."
An Electoral Commission spokesperson provided additional context, explaining that their own examination of donations related to the 2024 leadership contest has been temporarily suspended while they await the outcome of the Metropolitan Police's parallel investigation.
Jenrick has firmly rejected the allegations, characterizing them as completely unfounded. He expressed that it was unsurprising that what he described as an establishment determined to prevent Reform UK from implementing meaningful change would resort to making claims that he considers demonstrably incorrect. Jenrick emphasized that he has had no communication with the Metropolitan Police regarding this matter whatsoever.
A spokesperson for the Reform UK MP dismissed the suggestion that Jenrick knowingly accepted impermissible donations, describing such claims as an "untrue, politically motivated smear." The spokesperson elaborated that Ullmann was introduced to Jenrick by a Conservative MP, and the permissibility of Ullmann's donations had been verified by the party before acceptance.
The spokesperson further stated that Jenrick and his campaign team adhered to all electoral legislation when receiving the contribution from Spott Fitness Ltd in 2024. Importantly, Jenrick had never met, spoken with, or maintained any contact with Gary Klopfenstein, and was unaware of any connection between Klopfenstein and Ullmann's donation until the Electoral Commission contacted him.
Jenrick demonstrated full cooperation with the Electoral Commission's inquiry, supplying comprehensive records that he and his representatives believe definitively refute the allegations. These records were provided during 2025, according to the spokesperson's statement.
