Russian attack on Ukraine market kills five
A drone strike by Russia targeted a market in southern Ukraine, killing five individuals and wounding 21, including a 14-year-old girl, as reported by the prosecutor general’s office. The incident occurred at 09:50 local time (06:50 GMT) in Nikopol, a town situated across the Dnipro River from territory now under Russian control following the full-scale invasion.
Images from the regional prosecutor’s office depict the aftermath: shattered kiosks scattered with debris, including metal, glass, and food items. This attack follows a surge in civilian casualties on Friday, with at least 15 deaths attributed to drone and missile strikes nationwide. Meanwhile, Ukraine retaliated by striking the southern Russian city of Taganrog overnight, resulting in one fatality and four serious injuries, according to Russian authorities.
“The attack caused a fire in the logistics company’s premises,” stated regional governor Yuri Slyusar. “We are investigating the incident as a potential war crime.”
Russia’s defense ministry cited “air defense operations” as the cause of the casualties, while Ukraine claimed to have hit a factory in Togliatti, which supplies military parts to Russian forces. Nikopol, a frequent target, has seen nearly half its 100,000 residents flee for safety. However, this attack struck during a bustling morning, escalating the toll.
A second strike on the same market location injured two additional people, the prosecutor noted. Russia launched nearly 300 drones overnight, adding to the death toll in Kharkiv and the Sumy region. Moscow reported shooting down 85 Ukrainian drones during the assault. As daytime attacks by Russia have become more frequent, US-led peace efforts have stagnated, with the Trump administration diverting attention to the Middle East conflict.
