Tories urge Waitrose to reinstate worker sacked ‘after tackling shoplifter’
Tories Call for Waitrose to Rehire Employee Dismissed Over Shoplifting Incident
The Conservative Party has issued a letter to Waitrose, pressing the supermarket chain to restore a worker who alleges he was terminated after stopping a shoplifter from stealing Easter eggs. Walker Smith, 54, shared his account with the Guardian, stating he lost his job following a confrontation that ended in a short scuffle, two days after the incident.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticized the dismissal, arguing it highlights a broader issue where offenders act with “little fear of consequence.” He proposed reinstating Smith and awarding him a bonus for his “bravery and initiative” in defending the store. Waitrose responded, claiming the situation “does not cover the full facts,” and reiterated that they adhere to a standard appeals process for resolving such cases.
“Staff safety must come first,” Philp asserted. “Yet dismissing a long-serving employee in these circumstances sends the wrong message. It penalizes those who act, while offenders remain unchallenged.”
Smith expressed regret over his actions but emphasized he intervened after witnessing repeated thefts at the Clapham Junction branch for five years. “From drug addicts to teenagers, people steal bits and bobs or walk out with wine bottles,” he said. “We’re not allowed to do anything.”
According to the Guardian, Smith seized the bag used by the shoplifter to conceal £13 worth of Easter eggs, leading to a brief struggle. He later admitted to throwing a broken chocolate egg in frustration at shopping trolleys. Despite apologizing to the manager, the incident was escalated within the store.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage commented on the matter, tweeting: “We are now a country that favours criminals over law enforcers.” In a statement, Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, stressed their commitment to safety, noting policies that protect both staff and customers. They highlighted instances where employees were hospitalized during confrontations with shoplifters, though recovery was typical.
The supermarket chain argued that retail crime poses a “serious danger to life,” and that their policies must be strictly followed to avoid risking lives. They also mentioned their advocacy for retail theft to be recognized as a standalone offense, aiming to better safeguard workers.
