World’s best keeper? Raya helps Arsenal get back on track
World’s Best Keeper? Raya Reinstates Arsenal’s Champions League Dominance
Arsenal’s David Raya has posted seven clean sheets in the Champions League this season, according to his teammates. The Spanish goalkeeper’s latest display in the 1-0 win against Sporting showcased four critical saves, with Kai Havertz securing the decisive goal in stoppage time. Raya’s heroics have positioned him as a serious contender for the global player of the year award, an unusual feat for a team currently leading the Premier League and competing in a European quarter-final.
Raya’s 22 clean sheets across 41 matches in all competitions this season place him at the top of Europe’s top five leagues. His performance in Lisbon marked a pivotal moment for Arsenal, who had endured consecutive defeats earlier in the campaign. While Mikel Arteta’s side faced criticism for being “almost there” before the match, Raya remained on the bench for those setbacks. Arteta had selected Kepa Arrizabalaga for the defeats against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final, a decision scrutinized after Kepa’s error allowed Pep Guardiola’s team to take an early lead.
“Unbelievable” is how match-winner Kai Havertz described Raya to Amazon Prime. “I think [he is] still underestimated in the world of football, but for me, the last two seasons, the best keeper in the world.” Havertz added, “He’s outstanding, he’s saved us so many times and we’re very glad to have him.”
In Tuesday’s match, Raya made a crucial early save against Maxi Araujo, deflecting a powerful strike onto the crossbar. He followed with three late interventions to maintain the draw before Havertz’s late winner sealed the victory. “It’s something that I’m there for,” Raya explained to Amazon Prime. “I’m trying to help the team as much as possible in any single action, not just defending but commanding and on the ball.”
Raya’s seven clean sheets in the Champions League this season are the most by any goalkeeper in the competition. “Those clean sheets make it easier to win games,” he emphasized. “Tonight, scoring in the last minute and keeping that clean sheet decided those type of games.”
Arteta highlighted Raya’s evolving role, noting the goalkeeper’s acrobatic saves and his contributions with the ball. “The keeper in the last few years has changed and evolved rapidly,” the manager said. “The amount of things we ask him to do is significant. But many positions have similar demands now, and players must adapt to that.”
Raya’s leadership and playmaking abilities have become integral to Arsenal’s attacking strategy. With 15 clean sheets in 31 Premier League matches this season, he leads the division. Though he shared the Golden Glove trophy with Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels in the 2024-25 season, Arsenal hope his personal accolades will soon align with team success.
