British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again
At 17, Sky Brown, a British teen, secured the skateboarding world championship title once more. The competition, held in Sao Paolo, faced initial delays due to “adverse weather conditions and recurrent rainfall.” Despite the setbacks, Brown clinched victory, sharing a moment with her father, former skateboarder Stewart Brown, who celebrated her triumph in Brazil.
“This feels huge and I’m so thankful,” said Brown. “There are bigger things and I just pray for peace for the world.”
Organizers opted to finalize the event after two runs were completed, citing unsafe conditions from heavy rain. The results were announced with Brown leading at nearly 88.16 points, while Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa earned silver at 84.36 and American Minna Stess took bronze with 83.90.
Brown, now ranked 7th globally, noted the significance of her win on International Women’s Day. “The level is crazy. I had to put a lot down to get here, but I am definitely bummed that we couldn’t fully do a final,” she remarked following the contest.
Previously, the 14-year-old claimed the title at the World Championships in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with a best score of 90.83 from three runs. She also became Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist at 13 during the Tokyo 2020 Games. A second bronze came in the park competition at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, just a week after dislocating her shoulder.
Born in Miyazaki, Japan, to her Japanese mother, Mieko, and British father, Stewart Brown, the athlete competed in the US Open in 2016 at eight years old. She first represented Great Britain in 2018, a move that set her on the path to global stardom.
Skateboarding was one of four new sports added to the Olympics in 2020, featuring events in both “park” and “street” disciplines. This year’s competition highlighted Brown’s continued dominance in the sport.
