Man faces attempted murder charges in attack on home of OpenAI’s Sam Altman

A 20-year-old Texan, Daniel Moreno-Gama, is accused of hurling a Molotov cocktail at the residence of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in San Francisco. He is set to appear in court on Tuesday for state charges that include two counts of attempted murder. In addition, federal authorities have charged him with possessing an unregistered firearm and attempting to destroy property via explosive devices. The U.S. Justice Department claims he was found with materials critical of artificial intelligence, urging actions against executives and investors in the sector.

Arraignment and Legal Allegations

Moreno-Gama’s arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The federal complaint states he ignited a fire at an exterior gate of Altman’s home around 4:00 local time on Friday before escaping on foot. Later that day, he allegedly attempted to target the San Francisco headquarters of OpenAI, where ChatGPT is developed. Security personnel reported he tried to smash the glass doors with a chair, according to the complaint.

Documents and Motive

Authorities recovered incendiary devices, a kerosene jug, and a lighter from the suspect. The documents he carried, including a section titled “Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction,” outline concerns about AI’s threat to humanity. They also state, “If I am going to advocate for others to kill and commit crimes, then I must lead by example and show that I am fully sincere in my message.” These materials list names and addresses of board members, CEOs, and investors across various AI firms.

“Violence cannot be the norm for expressing disagreement, be it with politics or a technology or any other matter,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“We welcome a good faith debate, but there is no place in our democracy for violence against anyone, regardless of the AI lab they work at or side of the debate they belong to,” OpenAI added in a statement.

Incident Confirmation and Safety

Local and federal officials initially withheld details about the victim or the targeted property. However, an OpenAI spokeswoman confirmed to the BBC that the attack occurred at Altman’s home. No one was harmed during the incidents, and San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins praised the safety of Altman, his family, and employees during a Monday press conference.

Context and Public Reaction

Hours after the attack, Altman referenced a recent article in The New Yorker questioning his leadership and trustworthiness. He called it an “incendiary article about me” and urged reducing “explosions” in both homes and discourse. Later, he apologized on social media for associating the piece with the alleged assault. OpenAI’s 2022 launch of ChatGPT sparked global interest in AI chatbots, fueling significant financial investment and raising doubts among stakeholders.

Recent FBI Action

On Monday, the FBI executed a raid in Texas linked to the incident, as noted by Director Kash Patel on X. The attack highlights growing tensions around AI development, with critics advocating for more aggressive measures against its leaders.
