Harry and Meghan arrive in Australia for four-day tour

Harry and Meghan Begin Four-Day Australia Tour

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have landed in Australia for a four-day tour that merges charitable initiatives with private, profit-driven activities. No longer serving as working royals, the couple is visiting in a personal capacity, with the trip said to be fully funded by them. Their itinerary includes meetings with patients and staff at a children’s hospital, military veterans, and survivors of domestic violence.

Commercial Aspects of the Visit

Prince Harry will deliver a keynote address at the InterEdge Psychosocial Safety Summit in Melbourne, where attendees can pay up to A$2,400 per ticket. Some proceeds from the event are allocated to the charity Lifeline. Meghan will host a women-only “girls’ weekend” in Sydney, organized by the producers of the Her Best Life podcast, featuring an in-person conversation and a VIP package allowing guests to secure a group photo with her.

Details about Harry and Meghan’s compensation for these commercial events remain undisclosed. The visit also includes a rugby match in Sydney, marking the end of their official schedule. However, the couple has opted for fewer public interactions, aiming to reduce community disruption while focusing on their personal objectives.

Previous Visit and Context

This marks their first trip to Australia since 2018, when they spent nearly a week in the country shortly after their marriage. During that time, large crowds gathered to welcome them, but this year’s itinerary lacks public meet-and-greets. The shift to private status since January 2020, when they relinquished their HRH titles, has influenced the current approach, with no mention of taxpayer support for security during the visit.

Security and Public Safety

Victoria and New South Wales police have confirmed their presence to ensure public safety. A spokesperson for the New South Wales Police Force stated,

“The operation will require some additional security measures throughout their stay in New South Wales, while minimising any disruption to the community.”

Victoria Police noted,

“We are aware two high-profile individuals are visiting Melbourne in a private capacity in April. Police routinely assess events and visits and will deploy resources as necessary to ensure community safety.”

Brand Expansion and Legal Matters

There are indications that Australia could become a market for Meghan’s As Ever lifestyle brand, which was highlighted in a Netflix series produced by the couple’s company. Last year, the brand registered trademarks in 12 product categories within the country. Additionally, this trip represents Harry’s first public appearance since he was named in a defamation lawsuit by Sentebale, the African charity he co-founded.
